During the All-School Assembly on Thursday, November 20, amidst the celebration of our academic, athletic, and student council successes of the first term, Hawthorn paused to take time to honour enduring qualities that have shone forth in five Upper School students in particular:
Friendship – Lucia
This student listens attentively to her friends, and offers thoughtful advice while always respecting their freedom. She demonstrates strong empathy and is a compassionate, supportive listener.
Kindness – Yuna and Simona
The first student is consistently attentive to the needs of others and is always willing to listen and support her peers.
The second student has shown kindness by hand-copying textbook exercises for a classmate who has not yet received her textbook, ensuring that her peer can keep up with the homework.
Diligence – Ebunoluwa and Katelyn
Diligence is a quality rooted in the Latin word ‘diligere’ which means to love.
The first student displays genuine love for learning by sending an email about how much she is enjoying a certain topic and what she is discovering in it. She is considerate and non-judgmental, and stands up for justice.
The second student initially planned a presentation on a complex philosophical question and was given a resource containing summaries of twenty different perspectives. Although she was only expected to read two or three, she chose to read all twenty. Later, she decided to change her presentation topic, for which she prepared by reading two articles and watching three videos, clearly demonstrating exceptional dedication.
Congratulations once again to Lucia, Yuna, Simona, Ebun, and Katelyn for the myriad of ways, big and small, in which you have shown that you are deserving recipients of these Virtue Recognition Certificates. Thank you for being examples of goodness and integrity for all of us!
