Hawthorn Wins Silver and Bronze in Speech Contest!

Hawthorn Wins Silver and Bronze in Speech Contest!

On Thursday, February 5th, Hawthorn participated in the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) Mary Matthews Public Speaking Contest, Parish Level, at the Franciscan Church of St Bonaventure in Don Mills. This contest is part of the CWL Youth Awards Program which is intended to support Catholic youth to hone their skills in becoming people of faith dedicated to following in the footsteps of Christ to serve God and Canada. These contests are good confidence builders for students and an opportunity for them to share their views and values on important Catholic teachings.

Hawthorn is so very proud of the three brave and talented young public speakers who beautifully represented our school. Skyra F. ’31 spoke about the benefits of travelling. Cora H. ’30 spoke about the power of positivity. Aila R. ’30 spoke about the history of chocolate in the ancient Mayan civilization. Each student was also challenged to deliver an impromptu speech on the topic of ‘The Best Day of My Life’. Out of the total of seven contestants at this event, Hawthorn brought home the third place award – congratulations, Aila!! – and the second place award – congratulations, Cora!! The other contestants’ prepared speech topics covered artificial intelligence, the hobby of baking, personal entitlement, and a testimony of faith.

Congratulations Skyra, Aila, and Cora! You are inspiring communicators and you each showed eloquence, integrity, and courage through your wonderful speeches. Keep up the excellent work!
