Hawthorn’s second Muffin Monday for Seniors was held on November 18 from 3:15 – 3:45 pm. Our Grade 8 class helped set up by removing the extra tables in the atrium, stacking chairs, putting table cloths and fresh flowers on the round tables, and setting the tables with tea cups, plates, and napkins. They also prepared a platter with banana bread and coffee cake.
The students were happy to welcome five seniors from our community to our get-together. Those who arrived early got a tour of the school from two Grade 7 students. The Grade 6 students served the guests coffee, tea, and baked treats.
The first performance was a poem recited by the entire Grade 3 class called “Come Little Leaves”. Next, Diana (Grade 2) played a song on the piano. After that, Diana and Carina (also Grade 2) sang “Amazing Grace”, with the help of Miss Kim; it took a lot of courage for these two young girls to be in front of everyone in the atrium!
Finally, the students invited each of the seniors (all of them accepted!!) to learn a new folk dance – “Circle Waltz Mixer”. Then they danced for a few minutes to the music.
Two Grade 8 students cleaned up the atrium and washed all the dishes.
Through Muffin Mondays, our Lower School students are building experience in organizing public events, extending hospitality, and showing gratitude and respect for our community. We’re so proud of how they are jumping in with alacrity and open hearts and hands to meet this new adventure!
Spread the invitation to your senior neighbours, friends, and acquaintances for Hawthorn’s next Muffin Monday on December 16, from 3:15-3:45 pm. We look forward to hosting them for more complimentary refreshments and entertainment!
