On Tuesday, February 18th, our Gr. 5, 6 and 7 students bundled up and boarded a school bus bound for the Canadian Food for Children warehouse at 1258 Lakeshore Road East in Mississauga. As part of Hawthorn’s Spirit of Service Week, our students volunteered in this service and generosity project by helping to sort through donated food items and packing them into containers. We also brought candy collected from our Hard Candy Drive in October. Each student was encouraged to bring at least one canned / imperishable food item as a donation.

Grade 5 students spent most of the time loading the container that will be shipped overseas. They formed a chain and passed boxes to one another.

Grade 7 students moved boxes on skids, removed excess packaging from boxes of donated meat sticks, placed them in boxes, and then loaded them onto a trolley before moving them to the area where the grade 5 students were filling the container.
The CFFC adult volunteers were extremely impressed with our students and asked if they could come back again. Our students asked if they could return the next day and next week!

The Jr. Volleyball Team had a game later that afternoon so, unfortunately, those team members were not able to join us. Instead, they cleaned the school. Thank you for your help in keeping Hawthorn spick and span, girls!

Thank you to supervising teachers Mrs. Tomar and Miss Yu who organized this excursion and accompanied our young volunteers, and to CFC for hosting us. We are happy to participate in your mission of feeding the poorest of the poor in developing countries throughout the world.
