Hawthorn’s ‘Muffin Monday’ initiative continues to welcome seniors from our community to a monthly gathering of friendship, entertainment, and refreshments. Our most recent get-together began at 3:15 p.m. on April 14th, with two Grade 8 students welcoming six guests from St. Edward the Confessor Parish.

They gave the seniors a tour of the school, and then other girls served the seniors coffee, tea, and gourmet chocolates donated by Läderach Chocolatier Suisse (so delicious!). Ahead of time, Grade 10 students had helped set up the atrium by putting away tables, stacking chairs, putting the white table cloths on, and setting the tables for our guests.
For the performance, the LS began with ‘Vive La Compagnie’. They sang the traditional ballad and set movements to it from our daily Movement Minutes, inviting the seniors to do the movements with them 🙂

After that, the Gr. 1-7 students recited memorized poetry learned in class, classic poems by poets from Hilaire Belloc to Robert Louis Stevenson to Percy Bysshe Shelley.

The guests stayed longer, not wanting to leave right away, just to watch the LS students play as they waited for their parents to pick them up. They were delighted when the students invited them to our school play, Into the Woods! Grade 7 students helped clean up and do dishes after our guests left.
Thank you to all of our young students who graciously extended their spontaneous warmth, talent, and hospitality to our guests. We look forward to welcoming new and returning seniors in our neighbourhood to our final Muffin Mondays of the school year on May 12th and June 9th for complimentary coffee, snacks, and a performance. It’s our way of showing respect and gratitude for you! Come join us! Bring a friend! Contact Queenie Yu at 416-444-3054 or qyu@hawthornschool.com. For more, visit www.hawthornschool.com.
