Canada’s Federal Election on April 28th, 2025 was a consequential date in our nation’s history, and Hawthorn students prepared by engaging in meaningful discussions about our future, listening to our peers in candidate representatives’ speeches, and casting our ballots in Student Vote Canada.

Our vote results at Hawthorn mirror those of the nationwide Student Vote which saw close to one million elementary, intermediate, and secondary students go to the polls for the official candidates running in their school’s electoral district.

After a tight race held in our Learning Centre and operated by student election officials, we announced on April 29th that Hawthorn had voted Conservative for our federal riding of Don Valley West, and, nationally, Canadian students elected a Conservative minority government, with the Liberal Party forming the official opposition.

Thank you to Miss Francis for leading us, particularly our Grade 10 Civics class, in this dynamic experiential learning program designed to cultivate the habits of active and informed citizenship among us. We loved experiencing democracy first-hand, growing our awareness about government and the role of elected representatives, and learning how to participate effectively as informed and responsible citizens in our community, especially at this critical time in the life of Canada.
