Hawthorn Grade 10’s Chosen to Pilot Financial Literacy Test

Hawthorn Grade 10’s Chosen to Pilot Financial Literacy Test

On Wednesday, April 30th, our Grade 10 mathematicians stepped up to the plate to take part in the pilot test for Ontario’s new Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement. Hawthorn was one of the schools chosen at random to participate in the pilot, conducted by TVO Media Education Group. In doing so, we contributed to ensuring that the test and experience will be optimal for students starting next year when the requirement will take effect across the province. Grade 10 students will be required to score 70% or higher to meet the financial literacy graduation requirement in their Grade 10 math course, designed in part to enable students to create and manage a household budget, save for a home, and protect themselves from financial fraud.

During this pilot, participants responded to a series of questions related to financial literacy subjects online. There was no requirement for them to prepare as the questions covered topics learned through the grades 1-8 math curriculum and the Grade 9 mathematics course. As this will be a graduation requirement for students in future years of study, students’ participation in this project did not affect their mark in Grade 10 Math or progress in school. Results will not be reported for individual students or schools. Additionally, minimal student personal information was collected and then permanently deleted after pilot completion.

Thank you to our Grade 10’s and to Hawthorn Math teacher Ms Kotamraju for your reliable participation and support in this project. You have helped enhance the learning experience of students across Ontario!
