Awe and Wonder at the Butterfly Conservatory!

Awe and Wonder at the Butterfly Conservatory!

On Thursday, May 15th, the Junior School travelled 102 kilometres with our preschool friends to visit the Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario.

We were filled with excitement as we ventured out on a quest to meet thousands of these beautiful, wondrous, winged creatures who would teach us important lessons about change, hope, endurance, and life!

Upon arrival, we met Lauren, our guide, who introduced us to Milly and Theresa.

Milly is a millipede who likes to be petted, but when she feels threatened, she gives out some unwanted scents.

Theresa is a stick bug who also loves to be petted. Getting up close and personal with these insects gave us a unique perspective on insects in our world and got us thinking about why we need to take care of them. We learned some new words like exoskeleton, pupa, and chrysalis.

After visiting the insect gallery, Lauren guided us on a walk through the Conservatory. We saw turtles, goldfish, several different birds, gorgeous plants, and of course, lots and lots of butterflies!

We explored, asked questions, listened, and immersed ourselves in this amazing, thriving, lush tropical garden. We experienced the natural world as our wise and wonderful teacher, and we love her!

To cap off our visit, we all gathered together to have a picnic lunch under the umbrellas and then played in the playground before boarding the bus again. Most of us fell asleep during the ride home. We enjoyed our adventure to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory and recommend it to everyone!

Connecting, learning, sharing, and growing in this hands-on way taught us about Nature’s importance for everyone. We want to help her thrive so that we can, too!

We give our special thanks to Mrs. Hamza and Mrs. Murillo, our amazing JS faculty who accompanied us on our excursion. You made a beautiful, magical encounter with Nature come true for us!
