A Recognition of Virtues in Action

A Recognition of Virtues in Action

At the All-School Assembly on February 29, besides recognizing the academic achievements of the Upper School students (those who were on the honour roll and excellence roll were given certificates and asked to stand at the front), we also began to publicly recognize students for important virtues for the first time. We wanted to show students how their education goes far beyond the mark they get. Throughout February, we asked teachers which students stood out in terms of their attitude, how they treat people, and how much they help others. At the assembly, Ms. Yu, our Director of Character Education, described how each of the ten students listed below had been seen by her teachers as being particularly remarkable in living out a certain virtue and she invited each one to come up to the stage for a certificate of recognition. After the assembly, a guest was heard saying that this part of the assembly was what she loved the most!

Kindness: Isabella ’26
There’s a mother with a walker who comes regularly, and Isabella kindly helps the lady. Isabella is friendly, cheerful and respectful when she speaks with others.

Diligence: Dani ’27
Dani not only fulfilled the listed requirements of a Latin translation assignment, but she went above and beyond by making it into a small, beautifully crafted book to show that it was an original story. This shows love of learning, and true diligence, since the Latin root is diligere ‘to love’.

Courage: Laura ’28
Laura was loyal to her friend who was in a predicament. She had the courage to speak with a teacher to clarify a situation on her friend’s behalf.

Cheerfulness: Chiara ’26
Chiara has a constant, pleasant smile. She went out of her comfort zone to sing a solo for Father Fest, and when the music unexpectedly cut out, she maintained her cool and continued singing with a smile.

Spirit of Service: Mary ’27
Mary stays after class to stack chairs, sweep the floor, and cleans the room when everyone else has left. She foresees needs and offers to help, and she does all this without being asked.

Generosity: Naomi ’26
Naomi always takes more time to help carry chairs after all school events, and whenever the younger kids need help, she’s one of the first people to volunteer.

Dedication: Adesuwa ’27
Adesuwa has exhibited dedication and kindness in tutoring LS students, and has consistently shown responsibility and patience while assisting the younger children.

Perseverance: Sofia ’28
Sofia has been working very hard in gym class to achieve her goal. For the coordination test, she practiced in the gym after school to improve her skills.

Initiative: Monica ’28
Monica is not on the volleyball team but took the initiative to write her own cheer for the teams, and on the day of their games she would gather other students to cheer for the team.

Determination: Cecilia ’27
The board in the hallway outside the chapel is amazing. The entire Tubman house worked as a team on it because Cecilia, the House Leader, was determined to involve each house member even though coordinating the efforts of multiple people is challenging.

Congratulations to the following Upper School students for their exemplary integrity and dignity. We are so proud of you.
