‘Muffin Mondays’ have officially begun! As a gesture of respect and gratitude for senior citizens in our community, the Junior and Lower School students at Hawthorn School have reached out and invited all seniors to join us for complimentary refreshments, snacks, and student performances at a monthly social get-together.
Our first event took place on October 21st at 3:15 pm. Ten seniors came along with Fr. Eric and a former kindergarten student, Fr. Andrew Taylor. Earlier in the day, Mrs. Karen Nivet reviewed etiquette and serving with the grade 7’s, and the students quickly put the lesson into practice by serving the seniors coffee, tea and muffins. The students sang songs, recited poetry, shared some of their recent art work, and performed folk dancing. Students approached each of the seniors and invited them personally to dance with them, a joy-filled activity which all but two seniors were able to accept. Those who danced greatly enjoyed it!
The seniors expressed how very impressed they were with our students – how polite they are, and how kindly they served. One senior said that the children at her church are so shy that they would never sing and dance in front of others – unlike our students who jumped right in with bright-eyed alacrity and a spirit of welcoming. Another senior said that she did not know what to expect before coming to Muffin Monday, but what the students did totally exceeded her expectations. We are so grateful for all of the positive feedback – it feeds our souls!
Now that we’ve started, we are so looking forward to continuing meeting, greeting, and hosting our senior guests monthly throughout the year. So spread the word and invite senior friends in your life to join us for Muffin Mondays – we extend our warmest welcome to them!
