On October 29th, the Grade 10 class gave a short presentation to the entire Upper School during the weekly US Student Council Assembly. As part of their Career Studies course, the students presented some top take-aways from their reading of Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To spread the word on these excellent pieces of wisdom for adapting to change, overcoming challenges, and navigating a healthy work-life balance, the class decided to focus particularly on Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. They spoke about the value of refraining from a ‘Superman’ impulse to swoop in and solve others’ problems, to instead practise steady, sincere listening before acting. By giving space and time for others to express themselves without interruption, our Grade 10’s asserted, we let them know that they are heard and seen, respected and valued, and understood for who they are. As the Grade 10’s succinctly concluded, It’s not about you, it’s about them first.
Thank you, Ms Francis, for leading our young Career Studies scholars in developing the skills, strategies, and habits needed to succeed!
