November 5th dawned bright and warm for our amazing Lower School day trip down to the 102nd Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Students and faculty spent an exciting day full of interactive learning and discovery, meeting so many new farm friends – goats, lambs, sheep, pigs, cows, horses, alpacas, bunnies, …. and extremely talented dogs!
From the Farm to Table Discovery Zone to the Royal Petting Farm, from the Spirit of the Horse Show to the Automated Milking Demonstration, from the Butter Sculpting Showdown to Sheep Shearing, from the Agriculture and Food Workshop to the high-energy Superdogs Show, truly this historic fair opened our young eyes and minds (and noses!) to a myriad of new experiences, knowledge, and memories about animals and farming.
Here are some tips directly from our students’ perspective 🙂
Don’t and I mean DON’T get lost.
Always get free samples.
DON’T step on poop!
Clean your shoes after visiting the horses and cows.
NEVER try fire cider; it burns your throat!
Pigs are gigantic, so do not chase.
Cows are smelly and need to take a bath.
Clean all your clothes and shower or else you will stink.
The dogs were adorable and very talented. Clare and Paola want them.
Thank you to all of the fair organizers, farmers, equestrians, dog trainers, chefs, and countless others who make this important agricultural tradition come alive every year and who welcomed Hawthorn so warmly. We loved our day with you!
