On Thursday, November 21st, Hawthorn gathered at an all-school assembly to celebrate our students’ triumphs of the 2024 Fall Term. Miss Kim opened the ceremony by playing piano accompaniment while we stood at attention to sing our national anthem, O Canada.
Our School Head, Mrs. Flores, gave the opening remarks and spoke about the virtue of gratitude which everyone has been charged to improve upon since the first week of school. She introduced the next virtue which we will highlight as a community, which is respect.
Miss Zupan then welcomed Hawthorn’s mascot, our bee, who entered the atrium with two friends and was greeted with great applause and cheering. She then announced the recipients of the Virtue Bees in each grade from the Junior School to Grade 7. We are so impressed by our students, and we feel blessed to benefit from their commitment to so many virtues. Hawthorn is better because of you!
Miss Yu also announced the US students who were nominated by the teachers, staff and mentors for various virtues that they had lived well. Please see the separate article about these exceptional students.
Miss Zupan continued by announcing the US students who, through their perseverance and hard work, earned a place on the Honour Roll (academic average of 90 – 94%) and Excellence Roll (above 95%).
Countless hours and a personal commitment to fulfilling their student vocation to the best of their ability went into such impressive academic accomplishments. Well done, students!
Our President and VP of the Student Council, Ximena and Ana Maria, gave an update about how many points each house has so far, congratulating in particular Nightingale House, which is in the lead with 835 points. They encouraged members of all houses to continue showing school spirit.
Mrs. Pazooki went up to the podium to say a few words about athletics before welcoming Ebun who gave an update about Hawthorn Athletics. Tubman House’s Representative, Ceci, spoke about Hawthorn’s Christmas Generosity Project to collect gift cards for eight families in need.
The Grade 5 class got up in front of the entire school to encourage everyone to attend the upcoming Advent Lessons & Carols and Christmas Nativity Pageant on December 8th.
Miss Zupan spoke about more upcoming events: the All-School Mass on December 9th, the All-School Advent Excursion to the Young People’s Theatre to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, followed by a visit to the Distillery District Winter Village on Friday December 13th; Muffin Monday with Seniors on December 16th; and Hawthorn’s Christmas Mini-Markets for which students are industriously making crafts.
The assembly concluded with the LS Choir leading the singing of the Hawthorn School Song, Forever in Our Hearts. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this celebration of our students, and to each of our students, sung and unsung, who do their part in visible and hidden ways to build up our community and blossom with virtue and distinction!
