Huge congratulations go out to Grade 7 student Aila who won it all at the top level of the Mary Matthews Public Speaking Competition! The Toronto Diocesan level of the competition took place on Saturday, March 1st at St. Roch’s Parish in Weston, Ontario. After winning at the parish and regional levels on February 6th and 15th, Aila rose to the final contest where she competed against a group of older and equally impressive young speakers.

She presented her prepared speech with great poise and truly engaged everyone in her enthusiasm about all things King Tutankhamen. Her approach to the impromptu speech topic, If you were lost in the forest, what number one skill would you rely on, was a unique one about observing the animals and taking their lead. The room was electrified with applause and cheering when Aila’s name was called for 1st place!

Aila has been invited to deliver her winning speech in front of 1,000 delegates of the 104th CWL Toronto Diocesan Council Convention to be held at the Ajax Convention Centre on Monday, April 28th. She will be receiving one of the Catholic Women’s League Youth Awards at a presentation scheduled to begin at 6:30p.m. Hawthorn will be bringing an enthusiastic contingent of staff, students, and families to the event to show our unflagging support and immense pride in Aila. Well done, Aila!
