This January and February, our Grade 11 cohort has once again been fortunate to immerse themselves in an intensive 6-week course in the important art of public speaking. Taught within the context of the ENG3U course, these workshops offer a learn-by-doing experience and are taught by public speaking expert Janet Heidker, past president of the Humber Shores Toastmasters Club. With each meeting having a rotating roster of toastmaster, speakers, timer, grammarian, sergeant at arms, chairman, and secretary, students elevate and practise their prepared and impromptu public speaking skills, with everyone contributing to discussion. This course provides a timely opportunity to hone students’ gift of expression as they look forward to preparing and presenting their thesis-level Master Discourse Project in Grade 12.
