In a Big Sister/Little Sister event, the Hawthorn Gr. 3’s invited our Spanish exchange students to join them as they ventured out to the Fort York National Historic Site on Friday, April 4th.

To learn more about Toronto’s history prior to 1812, we explored the preserved 43-acre archeological park, Fort York, “where British soldiers, First Nations warriors and Upper Canadian militia men stood together against the United States and its mission to capture Toronto in the War of 1812.”

The dramatic experiences of our Canadian founders resonated loudly over the centuries to our young women of today as we surveyed original War of 1812 buildings, immersed ourselves in the steps leading up to the Battle of York, came face-to-face with iconic artifacts, and pondered how our country continues to stand strong and free today.

After enjoying lunch at Fort York, we went to Trillium Park where the Grade 3 students were especially energetic!

They climbed rocks, rolled down a hill, ran back up and ran down the hill, and invited their Spanish Big Sisters to do the same. It was hard to leave the park because of its beauty and all the fun that we were having!

Thank you to the Hawthorn and Orvalle faculty for accompanying us on this spring day trip. We loved feeling our Canadian history come to life and spending a beautiful day out with our Spanish ‘Big Sisters’!
