It was the Upper School’s turn to enjoy the sweetness of sugaring off time in Ontario and we were thrilled to be able to invite our Spanish exchange students from Colegio Orvalle in Madrid to join us.

Our destination was the sugar bush at Pefferlaw Creek Farms in Uxbridge on Monday, March 31st. Together, we shared the beauty of this special Canadian cultural tradition, hiked in a natural rural environment, and leapt into team-building activities chosen to knit our international connection even more closely.

Spring weather in Canada can be particularly changeable, as our excursion proved. The day before our trip there was a huge ice storm in southern Ontario, so when we arrived at Pefferlaw Creek there was no power.

Our students were smiling throughout even though it was a chilly, cloudy day and they had lunch in a cabin with little natural light. We jumped onto the hay stacks in front of the barn, and then walked through the forest with our guide who explained how maple sap is collected and made into syrup.

We were particularly excited with the maple syrup tasting, and all the Orvalle students bought maple syrup to bring back to Spain. Yummm!
