Hawthorn Sweeps in North American Handwriting Contest!

Hawthorn Sweeps in North American Handwriting Contest!

Congratulations to our LS students for their incredible participation in the 11th annual Cursive is Cool Contest. Their teachers were very happy to share their students’ creative efforts and improved handwriting skills with the organizers of this North American contest. We share their goal of inviting kids to put pen to paper, get excited about the vital skill of handwriting, and take pride in their writing. As Sheila Lowe, president of the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation, says, “Cursive writing is more than just a competency – it enhances cognitive development, fine motor skills, and creativity, among other things.”

Handwriting specialists judged entries on such criteria as legibility, consistency, neatness, and creativity in answers to open-ended questions. These are the Hawthorn students who have won in this year’s contest:

7th Grade:
Wanyi C. – 1st place
Cora H. – 2nd place
Valentina L. – 3rd place

5th Grade:
Ariella R. – 1st place
Amiee Z. – Creative

3rd Grade:
Jewel F. – 3rd place
Catherine H. – Creative

2nd Grade:
Brianna L. – 2nd place

Yes, Hawthorn did exceptionally well! The contest has never had a single school sweep the 7th grade! Our awards and prizes (how exciting!) will be sent to our school address for distribution, and the names of all of the winners of the contest will be posted on the Cursive is Cool social media.

Congratulations to Hawthorn and our outstanding writers, and thank you to our LS English faculty for helping our young calligraphers to unlock their potential for abstract thinking, expand their memory capacity, and develop their individual expression in this digital age!
