As at the end of every school year, all Hawthorn students in Grades 1 through 7 complete the Canadian Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (CAT4). The CAT4 evaluates key academic skills in language and math skills. It also offers valuable insights into students’ learning abilities and how their performance compares with peers across the country. No special preparation is required on the part of the student.
This year, our Lower School students will once again participate in the CAT4, completing the various components of the test in short segments, ranging from 15 to 50 minutes each, over the course of May 22nd to June 2nd. The sessions include a practice test and then: reading, word analysis, vocabulary, spelling, writing conventions, mathematics, and computation/estimation. The goals are to provide an indication of whether a student’s score for a test objective meets grade-level expectations, track the school’s academic progress over time, and all the while keep classroom routines as undisturbed as possible.
Good luck to all of our LS linguists and mathematicians! We look forward to receiving your results over the course of the summer and to sharing them with you in Fall 2027.
